A food collage of 2013

December is the time when people look back at the year that is quickly passing by, and naturally for us, we look back at the food we had and many of the wonderful things we came to experience in 2013.

We didn't travel as much around this year (in terms of mileage - in fact it's the first time in many years we never set foot outside of Asia all year long), but nonetheless we were blessed with many wonderful meals while we were travelling. Yukawatan in Karuizawa by award-winning chef Noriyuki Hamada, Kokin Aoyagi by the legendary Hirohisa Koyama, and Ginza Harutaka by the young sushi master Harutaka Takahashi definitely topped the list of the best restaurants we tried this year, not to mention several other sushi meals I had the chance to try in my many trips to Tokyo, all within 2013.

In comparison, it's much less exciting in the local front. Actually we had quite a few of disappointing meals, and honestly I couldn't recall trying any new restaurants that blew me away - dinner at Butcher's Club, a butchery/private kitchen in Aberdeen, was perhaps the most satisfying meal on home turf this year, followed by Catalunya, which I have tried soon after its opening in late spring this year. We were also happy with our several visits to Caprice at The Four Seasons - and hope they can keep up with a new chef coming on board soon.

Let's hope 2014 is another great year of life adventure, and more importantly and hopefully, a delicious one! Merry Christmas everyone!
