Simple Staycation

Recently we decided to stay at The Conrad Hong Kong for a quick weekend staycation. A business hotel in the middle of the city is probably not our ideal getaway venue, but a room package that included breakfasts, executive lounge access and dining credits meant we paid (almost) next to nothing for the room itself. And being a hotel loyalty program junkie I thought it's a good way to rack up some program points for Hilton Honors for which I have been a member of.

We were planning to check in before our lunch at their Golden Leaf restaurant downstairs, but found ourselves in the line of around 10 groups ahead of us by the time we arrived before noon. Well they didn't make us wait in line with our bags, but giving everyone a number and waiting to be called at the lobby left much to be desired to be honest. But to their credits, they did manage to give us the room key right before our lunch booking so we got time to settle down before eating.

The room itself was on par with what one would expect for a high-end business hotel. The Harbor View rooms are probably the preferred one by most, but I actually liked our room facing the other side (called the Peak View) with plenty of green landscape and a bit of the urban view of Wanchai and Causeway Bay. The size was alright with just about everything one want for a comfortable stay. The upgrade to Executive Room (courtesy of their PR team) meant we got a better view from higher floor and access to the Executive Lounge on Level 59 with breakfast, afternoon tea and evening cocktails service available.

The lounge took up half a floor, a bit small considered the size of the hotel, but at least for a few times we were there we didn't need to wait for a table. The afternoon tea set was presented in a silver-plated tray with sweet and savory bites, and during the cocktail happy hour that followed, food was served buffet-style at the small pantry on the side with a good selection of hot dishes that go with the drink menu consisting of basic house pours of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. That's our spot for spending much of our afternoon, just chilling, eating and drinking.

We decided to have breakfast at the Executive Lounge the next morning as well. They actually had a wider selection of food than I expected, with food stations spreading across two ends of the dining area and some items (eggs and noodles) made to order. I especially loved the pastries warmed in an oven, which made them extra tasty when hot!

We were notified in advance that their pool was closed for maintenance during our stay, and knowing the hotel was fully-booked with staycation-goers with families I felt we didn't miss it much.

Instead, we spent the next morning having a leisure stroll of the Hong Kong Park right behind the hotel, something we always wanted to do but never got a chance to. The aviary is one of the unique features of this urban park and home to more than 80 different species, and the Museum of Tea Ware (an extension of the Hong Kong Museum of Art) is a great place to visit for tea and tea ware lovers. It's not our first visit to either, but good to just hop over to check them out again. And when we returned from our walk in the park, we dropped by to visit a church which have their Sunday worship and sermon regularly at the hotel ballroom in the basement to cap our pleasant and quiet Sunday morning.

Turned out we didn't do much, but we got the staycation break we wanted.
