We could not have asked for a better week to enjoy the short cruise along Victoria Harbour on a remodeled Star Ferry with the legendary afternoon tea served by The Peninsula team.
Some of us were given a preview of the new joint program by Star Ferry and The Peninsula combining two iconic "Hong Kong experiences" into one fine event-filled afternoon. The retrofitted World Star ferry, completed with an outdoor deck area, glass roof, bar and fancy wooden furniture and couches done a few years ago, was given further upgrade with The Peninsula upholstery and silverware table setting.
Champagne was served as we embarked, followed by the lavish savory and sweet bites served on the classic silver tray, as we set sail on the harbor cruise tour. My eyes were set on a few specially designed mini cakes for the cruise, including the Star Ferry mont-blanc cake and the apple, cinnamon and caramel tartlets in the shape of a lifebuoy! Middle of the tray were the few savory items - my favorites were the beef pastrami and the Tuna Nicoise open sandwich served on a mini focaccia. Then of course at the bottom was the hotel's famous classic scones that need no further introduction, served with clotted cream and strawberry jam on the side.
It's been ages since we were able to attend such a large event without any restrictions in town so we all treated this as a social gathering of sorts to catch up with many of our friends, all the while enjoying the live music by The peninsula band, the gorgeous view along the Victoria Harbor, the occasional sea breeze, and of course, free-flowing champagne and wines served throughout our journey.
As we approached the pier towards the end of the cruise, more canapes and cocktails were passed along with those to be introduced as part of their Sunset Soiree cruise with a similar itinerary in the early evening. And we felt so spoiled by the great hospitality extended by both the Star Ferry and The Peninsula teams for a fun, relaxing, delicious and tipsy afternoon. No doubt this will be a hit for locals and tourists as we step into the summer peak season, and I am so happy to be one of the first to experience that.
