Traditional Sunday Roast

My friends and I am always bemoaning the lack of choice for Sunday roast around town, so I was quite excited when I heard Gough’s on Gough began offering the classic roast menu on Sundays recently, befittingly so for this new Contemporary British restaurant in the heart of Central, headed by the British chef Arron Rhodes.

The Sunday brunch at Gough’s on Gough was offered as one set-menu with the appetizers served family style and the rest in individual portions. We began with the seafood platter with four items presented in the icebath. I was expecting a larger platter with more selection but what we got were enjoyable with a few well-chosen pieces. Oysters were the one rich in mineral taste (the type I loved) and the clams and mussels were plump and creamy.

The duo of warm appetizers were then served – again while I thought the portion was a bit small for sharing they were delicious. I especially loved the cured arctic char with slightly pickled root vegetables, dots of skyr and herbs on the side for a touch of Nordic style – the fish was perfectly prepared with the right hint of cured flavor with the slightly firm texture. (the other dish, which was a soft-boiled duck egg with cured beef heart and asparagus, was good as well)

There’s a choice of mains but for us, it has to be the roast sirloin served with Yorkshire Pudding and sides – otherwise it’s not exactly a Sunday ROAST, isn’t it? The slices of Devonshire beef was perfectly roasted, with a good crust, tender and juicy inside with just a hint of pinkish meat. The Yorkshire pudding was warm and crisp, tasty with a generous pour of gravy. A few side vegetables were served in the middle of our table for sharing – my favorites were the roast potatoes and the snap peas.

There were again a choice of desserts or cheese for our last course. My small bowl of caramel chocolate mousse was just right, topped with cherry compote and crumbled almond biscuit underneath. Can’t go wrong with such decadent combination.

Free-flow wines and champagnes were offered as an option to the menu, but I was in the mood of their excellent cocktail menu. And I love my pear negroni was refreshing and rich, perfect for a cold and crisp afternoon like this. Service was as good as always, and it’s just lovely to chill in such classy dining room with the hard-to-find British traditional fares served on the table on an easy Sunday afternoon.

(The meal was by invitation and paid for by the restaurant)
