Sunday Brunch

It was a perfect day to go up to On Dining on a sunny Sunday afternoon to check out their new brunch menu with the theme “French Roast”. What’s not to like about the restaurant with the perfect city view through the huge balcony on the top of the building?

Even better was its food. Well, we enjoyed our many meals at the restaurant prepared by Chef Philippe Orrico’s team, but their latest brunch offering knocked one level down in uptight-ness but certainly a few levels up in terms of the variety plus value for money. I felt it was like breakfast, lunch and dinner for me in a single meal, where a couple dozens of dishes in small bites were served like a feast.

To start it was several dishes in tasting portion served for sharing – 10 different dishes to be exact, including the bread basket. The bowl of scrambled eggs covered in the shaved seasonal truffles was one of the highlights, but I also loved the raw oysters, and the mussels a la Mariniere served in a small bowl.

For main course, one could choose from different options, including a few reserved for larger group only. We went for the smoked “black” wagyu flap and the black cod teriyaki on the recommendation of their staff, and both were excellent choices. The beef was cooked sous vide then coated with toasted bread crumbs (hence the black color), and it’s served with the meat jus and a medley of sautéed vegetables, while the black cod was marinated with miso and served with a simple butter sauce and a spoonful of ikura, or salmon roes. On the side there’s salad and mashed potatoes – the potatoes were super creamy and rich in flavor.

We were eyeing on the dessert and cheese counter at the bar before the meal even started, so we didn’t waste any time going over and pick our cheeses and desserts. I was happy enough with just the mimolette and aged brie, but then there were more sweets and cakes to choose from. My favorite was the Paris-Brest and also the lime tartlet topped with meringue. Both classic French and they didn’t disappoint. I was satisfied with only the appetizer and the desserts, and throwing in the main course in the middle just made the deal sweeter.

Will definitely try to go back when it became even cooler so we could enjoy a bit of the winter sunshine in the balcony with the gorgeous view as backdrop. For the food too – those were the kind of dishes I could live with every weekend. I wish I could have every weekend.
