Light Italian Dinner

We headed down to Tosca di Angelo for a quick dinner on our staycation weekend at The Ritz Carlton Hong Kong. With literally non-stop eating (and drinking) since the night before, we opted for something light this time.

Felt great being able to quickly get changed in our room, then just hopped a few flights down to the restaurant which is located on the level right below the hotel lobby on 103rd floor. The dining area was almost full which was a surprise to us, as from our experience the staycation crowd didn’t always translate into more business in the hotel F&B outlets.

We were tempted by the long tasting menu at first, but at the end common sense prevailed and we went for the a la carte menu. I always admire their chef Angelo’s precise execution of simple Italian dishes and this showed in the couple courses we ordered. But before that, we began with a series of bite-sized amuse bouche plus a small bowl of fennel espuma topped with caviar. The tuna tartlet was nice, and so was the espuma in the glass bowl with the intense flavor. Bread basket and crispy flatbread was served with a choice of olive oil in different varietals which surely made it slightly more interesting.

My first course was the beef carpaccio. Fassona beef has the perfect fat balance and all’s needed was just artichokes, arugula, Parmigiana cheese and a drizzle of olive oil for the comforting home-style flavor. Have been craving for some pasta so I went for the tagliolini – made in-house of course and paired with a creamy mixed mushroom sauce plus some seasonal white truffles on top. Does look like this has been a nice truffle harvest season so far with great aroma coming out of the shavings, and I also love the intense mushroom flavor coming from the sauce, tossed with the bouncy pasta.

It’s one of the rare occasions that I would skip dessert at an Italian restaurant – that’s how full we were, but the staff was so kind to pass us the petit fours on a fancy plate with the “happy birthday” wording as our makeshift sweet course. Just one of those small nice gesture that made me happy.
