Fine Old School
I am excited when my friend and birthday girl C managed to get a dinner booking at the legendary (and somewhat secretive) SBI Canteen a few weeks ago and asked us to join as part of the celebration. I haven't been back for more than a year so I was eager to try some of the signature dishes by Chef Tak which many considered as some of the finest in town based on traditional old-school recipes.

North Point Private Kitchen
It's no secret that I enjoy the food at this no nonsense neighborhood eatery in North Point, whether that be for their Cantonese roast (including their exceptional roast goose) or other family style Chinese dishes. So one Sunday last month we booked out their private kitchen just across the street and check out their "tasting menu".

Easy Speakeasy Dinner
We were lucky to be given a sneak preview of dishes Chef Marco Livoti prepared for his upcoming popup at Test Kitchen at his lovely home/studio in Island South. The venue was perfect to run a cozy speakeasy/supper club, with the spacious show kitchen as the centerpiece with a long table which can seat 6 comfortably – location is meant to be a secret, so no address for you, but I love the view from the window overlooking the ocean.

One Of A Kind
You know the meal was a special one before it started when the commute involved a private boat that carried our group to where the lunch eventually took place. The 15-minute boat ride did feel longer than it was, almost like being transposed to a totally different country with the Santorini-like vibe surrounding this private beachside villa completed with a private pier.

Winter Treats
I do miss coming to "SBI Canteen" (a.k.a. Softbank Kitchen") every now and then, especially during the winter season when Chef Tak prepared his famous Snake Soup in this cozy, referral-only speakeasy. And in my last visit a couple months ago, we were lucky to get a dose of double whammy with the seasonal soup course plus another one serving in succession.

Across the Street
“Come eat at my secret stash spot”, suggested M, referring to the new space he acquired just across the street from his restaurant Renren Heping (äŗŗäŗŗåå¹³å°é£Æåŗ) in North Point. We came to this neighborhood restaurant regularly mainly for its famous Cantonese barbecue and other home-style dishes, and also partly because its owner M is an old classmate of mine. And this time, he organized this dinner with a few of our common friends from school for an impromptu reunion of sorts with a special menu at this new shop.

Old School Canteen
I am sure not too many people have fond memories of food at their school canteen growing up – of course unless you happened to go to a culinary school or something – but for some random reasons the canteen of my old school has now turned into a sought-after private kitchen, which serves something slightly more elaborate than simple packed lunches and has a waiting list of over 3 months, and one could book only if you happened to be an alumni or know someone who is.

Dinner #36
Ten of us were more than happy to take up the table at Mesa Private Kitchen on Sunday evening, made available because someone cancelled at the last minute. We haven't heard about the place but we are always up for good food when C asked whether we were interested to join for the meal.

Leonard's Kitchen
One thing I learned from my last dinner at Chef Leonard’s place was if he invited you ever again, you just say yes and ask when. We enjoyed it last time around with a series of excellent and original dishes a few months ago and he somehow exceeded my expectation yet again with another epic meal last week.

That Epic Casserole
I could only count with one hand of a meal as memorable as
this in recent times when we went back to this secret spot in Sheung Wan for a
feast with some friends. It’s been around a year since my last visit, and the first
time CYY managed to make it to this unmissable place for the first time since
they moved to its current location.

Private Kitchen Dinner
We had a great dinner at the home of Chef Edgar Sanuy Barahona a couple of weeks ago. While Chef Edgar may not be a household name in Hong Kong’s restaurant scene he’s the force behind many successful ventures over the years, from the now-defunct (but acclaimed) BCN to Mercedes Me to his latest project Pica Pica (a tapas bar in Sheung Wan). He also started this new project called Privat, serving meal in a "supper club"-like format for his guests once a month right at his residence in Sai Kung. Strictly by referrals, and thanks to our friend V, who organized this and invited us in.

Hidden Treasure in Foshan
We came all the way from Hong Kong to the town of Foshan just southwest of Guangzhou for the sole purpose of checking out “102 House”, the speakeasy restaurant by the passionate restauranteur-chef team of Jimmy Yao and Jing-ye Xu, which has been getting quite some raves from a few foodies in the know.

Memorable Wine (and Dine) Night
When our friend T and A were so kind to offer to share their prized bottle of Chateau Petrus with all of us, we turned this into an evening of even more bottles to match, with everyone contributed to this extraordinary wine flight. For a few previous occasions I have enjoyed the outstanding ambiance and food and wine service at my another friend Mr Y’s business venture Hip Cellar/AnOther Place, so this time I again booked one of the private rooms for a Saturday dinner to go with our wines.

Celebrity Chef Dinner - Eating at Ding's Kitchen
It’s hardly
a surprise that this new private kitchen called “Ding’s Kitchen” in Causeway
Bay became the talk of the town lately as owner/chef Steve Lee (aka Ding Yeh é¼ēŗ or
Grandpa Ding) ran a hugely popular cooking show “Grandpa Kitchen” (éæēŗå»ęæ) on local TV,
showcasing some impressive techniques in old-school Cantonese cuisine. The menu
at his restaurant didn’t come cheap by any means, but tables were snapped up
quickly since it opened late last year, with many eager customers/fans/groupies
wanting to try the dishes they saw on the show and to see him cooking in
person.

Snake Soup at Another Private Kitchen
I just realized it’s been more than a decade since I last ate at Ngor Je’s Private Kitchen… not since she moved to its current location in Sai Ying Pun as far as I remembered. Until a friend of ours organized a snake soup dinner there recently and asked us to join on a Sunday evening.

The Evening with Snakes
A bad flu I
caught over the weekend didn’t stop me from joining some friends to the
Pottinger private kitchen for dinner. I was there late last year for what I
thought was the last time at this venue (since the building is poised for
re-development), but turned out it’s been delayed for another year, so maybe
this time it is the last.

Temple Food
Every time when I visited my friend Mina's kitchen studio Sook in Chaiwan, I couldn't help but exclaiming how much I love this space inside an industrial building, so spacious, tastefully decorated and practical - exactly how I wanted my own kitchen to be. Of course, adding to that Mina was an excellent cook and always enthusiastic to share the skills or inspirations by hosting pop-up dinners with specific themes or kitchen workshops with friends over.

Slow Food Awakening
Up a flight of stairs of a random industrial building in Kwun Tong is a small cafƩ/restaurant called "8104 Box of Life", and every Monday evening, Kong Yeah, a small advocacy group that supports local farming and food products, puts words into actions by hosting dinners at this place with an ever-changing menu using produce freshly harvested from local farms and other locally made artisan products.

Ringing In the New Year
We rang in the new year of 2017 with several delicious meals in the first week, one of which was at this private kitchen venue far far away in the countryside village of Kam Tin on a Saturday evening. My friend A spotted this place, called Choy Choy’s Kitchen, being named one of the best private kitchens in town, so he started to organize a dinner to check the place out with the group of us and worked out the logistics details with chef-owner Grace Choy beforehand.
