Good Old Sunday Roast

Sometimes it's the simplest dishes that made me happy, and this time, it's the good old Sunday roast, appropriately on a Sunday morning. I have enjoyed Chef Cary's traditional British cooking at Gough's on Gough before it closed a few months ago, but we were glad that he brought some of those dishes to his new post at Lobster Bar of Island Shangri-la.

Heard too many good things about the menu since it's introduced over a month ago, so there's no surprise the place was relatively packed when we went for the first seating which started slightly before noon. The menu was straight-forward - 3 courses with choices of appetizer, main and dessert.

We began with the table-side service of Bloody Mary prepared by the bartender from a cart pulled in front of us. The punchy Tabasco flavor sent us well-awake for the rest of the day, especially the Sunday Roast menu came with unlimited refills. I went for the Lobster Bisque for my first course. Rich and smooth and served with a slice of lobster claw and a dollop of creme fraiche adding to the creaminess.

We came here for the roast and it's the roast we were all having, and the four of us all went for the rib of beef. The thick slice took up almost half of the serving plate with generous spoonful of meat gravy on top. Taking up the remaining half were the sides of duck fat-fried potatoes, carrots, creamed spinach and Yorkshire pudding. That plus the baked cauliflower with cheese and bechamel sauce served in a separate mini baking pan. I am no expert in Sunday roast but I thought this was excellent - meat was tender and juicy and I liked the fatty bits in the center. The Yorkshire Pudding was blown up to the size of small balloon, airy inside with a nice, slightly crispy crust. And I just wish there were more duck-fat potatoes on my plate as I loved the crunchy crust from the double frying action. The portion was so generous that we seriously considered skipping dinner after.

My dessert choice was another no-brainer. The sticky toffee pudding was the signature dish and everyone's favorite at GoG (including mine), so when I saw this re-appeared on the menu here, I obviously went for this. Intensely sweet, spongy and swimming in a pool of traditional butter toffee sauce - it's intensely delicious.
